Is it eco friendly to cut down a fresh Christmas tree every year and let it die in your house? I suppose it could be even better if the trees were grown organically, whatever that may mean for tree farms. I worked at one for a year. During the summer I trimmed all the trees into the perfect Christmas tree shape. We never used any fertilizer or anything like that. Nor cut any lawn between the trees, just left them.
If people stopped buying trees, tree farms would suffer. Large area's with nothing but trees. What would take their place if the farms went under? Most likely subdivisions. I suppose it depends on how you get rid of your tree at the end of the year too. I just throw mine in the back yard.
Now precut trees are usually shipped in from far away. Often they are sprayed with color or a chemical to keep them green longer. So it would be better to go cut your own at a local tree farm. Some places even offer tree's with the root ball still attached. These are not cheap nor usually very big. They have to be younger trees so you can move them into your house. The ball of roots is quite heavy. After the season is done you can plant the tree in your yard. |
