Before planting begins, there is a process of thorough, detailed planning. Soil tests are done and the most appropriate locations to meet teak trees requirements are chosen. Our seedlings are selected from the best available sources. Plantations grown from the highest quality seeds result in a much more uniform growth and performance.
The planting site is prepared before planting begins. Our workers perform several different tasks such as eliminating unwanted vegetation, modifying drainage patterns and reducing the risk for soil erosion.
Several factors are considered while planting, for example location and spacing between the trees, careful planting in terms of depth and root placement. Proper planting techniques influence the growth of the trees and diminish mortality.
During the early stages of growth, the trees are more vulnerable to outside factors. Our workers remove competing vegetation, control any pests and prune the trees to increase the proportion of knot free wood. Once the trees are four years old, the care and monitoring they require is less intense, although it continues until their harvest. Our workers are trained to ensure that the plantation is properly maintained throughout the life of the trees.
Before the final harvest, two thinnings are done to allow the strongest trees to continue their growth. The thinning is used to reduce the density of the plantation to sustainable levels, by removing the poorest trees.
This balances the required spacing and quality of the plantation, resulting in more wood of higher quality being grown. These thinnings are done after the seventh and fourteenth growing season of the trees. The final harvest of the trees is done in their twentieth year, with subsequent replanting.
